Al-Arbae

Al-Arbae, officially Ajnad Al-Arbae (“The Four Commanderies”), is a country in the center of the Verusan Continent. It consists of a large peninsula with the Girawa Bay to the south and the Maladh Bay to the north, as well as territory to the west. It is bordered to the north by Saunnu & Khalij, to the south and southwest by Longana, and to the west by Sotoa. Its capital and largest city is Minah.

History

Records of the first societies within Al-Arbae's modern borders include the Masaa peoples to the south, the Megibiya city-state in the Girawa Delta, and the Raha kingdom on the east coast. Rivaling kingdoms arose throughout the region during the medieval era. By 1400, the Muzdahir house conquered most of its neighbors and established the Muzdahir Sultanate.

By 1800, foreign powers entering the Sotoan region cost the Muzdahiris much of their territory to the north, reducing the state to its original lands on the peninsula. Ten years of civil war rocked the nation as the then-Sultan's family lost its grip on power. The Sultanate collapsed by 1820 and was replaced by a republic.

With colonial conquests approaching the Sultanate's territory, the Muzdahiris allied with once-hostile neighbors and counterattacked, establishing important buffers against foreign encroachment. Accepting the need to unite against colonial rule, the Muzdahiris and its three allies North Sefimeda Republic, Gacanka Republic, and Wedebi Republic agreed to form the “Four Republics” - or Al-Jumhuriaat Al-Arbae - in 1885.

In 1953, a large-scale military coup replaced the four republics with commanderies (Ajnad). The new government maintained widely disputed elections, efficient at limiting freedoms previously enjoyed by its citizenry and suppressing dissent to its rule. As a result, the IUN started imposing economic sanctions in the 60’s. Though uprisings over the worsening economy occurred in the late 80’s, the government largely maintains tight control over its populace.

Geography & Climate

Al-Arbae's territory is home to several navigable rivers, creating fertile valleys and deltas that fed civilizations for millennia. Much of eastern peninsula is of a tropical savannah climate, featuring dense forests interspersed with flat grasslands.

To the north is the semi-arid Bardai Range, a dense ridge of mountains historically forming the border between northern and southern nations of this region.

Between the eastern and western savannahs is the Girawa and Kebri rivers, creating floodplains through an otherwise semi-arid region. Encompassing the western end of the country is the fertile and expansive Sefimeda savannah.

Al-Arbae experiences rainy and dry seasons, with heavy tropical rainfall in some months followed by dry and windy months. Much of agricultural society organized around this seasonal cycle and the resulting flooding of the various rivers providing rich, silty soil for productive harvests.
